One of Lakeland’s signature spring festivals, Sun n’ Fun, is fast approaching. Like as fast as an F-16 Thunderbird.
There’s a lot going on at this year’s festival, which begins on April 13 (two weeks from today), which is why I’m writing about it now, in order to get the word out.
Special Stuff this Year
First off, the U.S. Air Force is sending it’s premier aerial acrobatic squadron, the Thunderbirds, to the show.
The F-16 demonstration team “returns to SUN ‘n FUN to amaze & awe audiences by their precision choreography on both the tarmac of SUN ‘n FUN and the skies over Lakeland,” according to the Sun ‘n Fun Web site.
The team will be practicing on Thursday (2pm) and Friday (2:40) of Sun ‘n Fun week, and will give performances on Saturday and Sunday (both at 4pm).
Jeff Skiles, the copilot of the U.S. Airways flight 1549, dubbed “The Miracle on the Hudson” will be speaking about his experience at the evening program on Wednesday, at 8pm.
In addition, there’s all the regular stuff that makes Sun ‘n Fun such a circus to attend. Hot air balloon race on Saturday, parts exchange (I really do need a small jet turbine, I think), ladies tent (stop in for a massage!), and so much more.
The Sun ‘n Fun has, on their Web site, almost as many ticket varieties as there will be varieties of aircraft at this year’s show. Here are the ones you should look for if you want to save money:
5 after 5. Any day of the show, you can get in for only $5 if you come after 5pm. It’ll still be light for two or three hours, so that should make for a good time.
Florida Residents. If you pay $25 (adult Florida resident (bring ID) admission) on Saturday, you can come back Sunday for free. Sunday Florida Resident admission is $15 for adults, $5 for kids both days.
Otherwise admission is $35 for adults, $15 for “youths,” and kids get in free, if I’m reading this right.
Coming Soon: my next story will be about the history of Sun ‘n Fun. I’d love to get some memories of the show from our readers. If you have a story to share, simply e-mail me at firstname.lastname@example.org. Thanks!
