Alumni Spotlight Series: Jessica Gutowski of Florida Southern College

This week another Florida Southern College alumna shares with us what life after college has been like for her in Lakeland. Jessica Aileen Gutowski graduated from FSC in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication with a minor in Graphic Design. Jessica is originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan but has decided to stay in Lakeland rather than return North. Jessica currently works as a Volunteer Coordinator for the Gow Fields Election Campaign, Jessica orchestrates phone calls, precinct walks, plans events, and does paperwork pertaining to the campaign. Her favorite part is the event planning, “I really enjoy seeing a project from start to finish…please vote December 8!” says Jessica.
Aside from helping out with Gow Field’s Campaign, Jessica enjoys playing guitar, singing, waterskiing, meeting new people, going dancing downtown, organizing things, running, and spending time with friends and family. She is not yet married but has a boyfriend of almost 2 years named Jake Slaydon (also an FSC grad.) and she considers her kid to be her pooch named Colt. Jessica is currently involved with AllSolar and has been involved with the Polk County Builders Association in the past. She also has plans to become a member of Emerge Lakeland in the upcoming future.
#1) Why did you choose to stay in Lakeland after college?
When I was in college I planned to leave after graduation, but the more time I spent in Lakeland the more I realized it was a place I could call home. It gives you a small town atmosphere sandwiched between two big city lifestyles. I plan to stay even longer once Gow is Mayor.
#2) Where is your favorite place to go out to eat at in Lakeland?
Mt. Fuji. They have the cheapest, best, all you can eat sushi in town.
#3) What is your favorite part about Lakeland?
I love the weather and the lakes.
#4) What’s a favorite memory of college you have?
Going to Gonzo’s every Tuesday night with my bestest roommate, Jacqueline, to listen to our favorite band Asilo play.
#5) What is one addition or change that you think would make Lakeland better?
Gow Fields for Mayor… Duh. ☺ and bathrooms around Lake Hollingsworth.
#6) How would you encourage young professionals to come to or stay in Lakeland? I would have more fun activities to draw our attention, there is not many places to meet people in a non-alcohol setting besides a church. We need more free/cheap events geared towards young people.
#7) What’s a misconception college students have of Lakeland?
That everyone in Lakeland is a redneck, not true at all!
Thank you Jessica for your honest answers and great feedback! And, I agree, bathrooms around Lake Hollingsworth would be a plus!
